Mr. Clemens, how do I proceed, if I want my house to be defaced?
Via www.google.de/streetview you get on the portal of Street-View. On the homepage, You find the link: “apply for defacing”. Using the link https://streetview-deutschland.appspot.com/submission one gets directly to the formular, which helps to apply for the defacing. After the use terms have been explained, on the following page You add the address of your estate. Your house is then shown on a map. Stress the red marker in the middle of the roof of that house, You want to be defaced. Additionally, You have to give some information about the house, such as number of storeys, shape of roof or the front, so that Google can identify the house easier. On the third step, “verification”, You add Your contact datas and confirm to the defacing after a security question.
After sending the application for defacing, You´ll receive an e-mail with a validation, in which all the datas in the application are summerized. Additional to this, the mail contains a link to a website, on which You have to add a verification code. This You receive by post, to avoid abuse. Possibly, Google contacts You on Your e-mail address, if further information for the processing of Your application is needed.

Was the application for defacing very complex?
For persons, who don´t know much about the internet, it can take some time. But the process steps are explained quite detailed on the website. But You can only use the service, if You have an e-mail address. Who does not have an e-mail account, can apply for the defacing in written form, at Google Germany GmbH, reg. Street-View, ABC-Straße 19, 20354 Hamburg.

Mr. Prijovic, who can apply on objection?
The data privacy laws only protect natural persons. Thus objections can only be applied by persons, who act on their own behalf, e.g. owners and tenants of multiple-family dwellings. Also a single tenant can disagree to the picturing of the house he lives in. The interests of the other tenants or of the owner than don´t issue any more, the building will be defaced.
A company can not apply an objection for the company´s buildings, and communities not for public buildings or collectively for all citizens, unless they have been authorized by each single citizen concretely. So a delegation is possible, if an according representation is given.

Do I already find Google Street-View on the internet?
Street-View is already available for cities such as Paris, Rome or Zürich. With Street-View, You can experience streets, plazas and points of interest such as the Colosseum in Rome or the Zürich lake in a 360° angle-view. Each of these places has been photographed picture by picture and than been completed to a panorama picture. These pictures go online as a three-dimensional view of complete blocks and offer a photorealistic circuit through the cities.
German cities are not online yet. Up to the end of the year, Street-View shall be started for Berlin, Bielefeld, Bochum, Bonn, Bremen, Dortmund, Dresden, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt/Main, Hamburg, Hannover, Cologne, Leipzig, Mannheim, Munich, Nürnberg, Stuttgart und Wuppertal. The application for objection will be available until October 15th 2010, 12 p. m. for these cities.

How is the discussion going on in other countries, where Street-View has already started?
Abroad, the reactions are quite various: from similar doubts and harsh critics as in Germany up to a relaxed handling in the Netherlands and Great Britain. But topically, Google is under severe critics in nearly all countries, as on the recording tours also data from public networks and private data from open W-LAN networks have been recorded. In several countries, data protection authorities have started investigations.

What, if I´ve missed the deadline for the objection?
According to Google, even after this deadline an application to deface pictures in Street-View is possible at any time. Faces and car license plates will be made unrecognizable automatically. Who still finds faces and car license plates anyhow, or has objections against individual images for personal reasons, can notify this to Google. There is a tool, with which you can mark and notify these pictures directly on Street-View.

Mr. Clemens, is it reasonable to apply the objection?
I think, that each one should anwer this question individually for oneself. In this discussion, two major facts contradict to each other: on the one side, the data privacy protection, and on the other side the freedom of information. Security considerations are also issued in this discussion. Some people fear, that Street-View might be a help for burglars to plan a robbery.
The list of pros and cons is quite long. I think, that the discussion is also enraged partly by lack of information. If the defacing is reasonable for owners and tenants, should be cleared individually. The exact start and possible political restrictions are not concrete at the time, but clear is, that Street-View will come.
